In Malaysia, We are called Satu Malaysia (One Malaysia) where all races would care for each other no matter how different we are. Whereas in Singapore on the 21st of July is Racial Harmony Day where students would wear their national costumes to show where they came from.
Since I was schooling in an international school, I’ve got to know people from many types of countries and got to know how their customs were like back home. We also have to respect their ways of doing things even if their way of things might be different from our perspective.
For the Malays, We celebrate Hari Raya every year because for us it’s a muslim festival where we would celebrate it with our family and friends wearing our traditional costumes. For the girls, we would have to wear Baju Kurung while the Boys wear Baju Melayu.
(Hari raya '09 in Singapore.)
I’d go back to my hometown in Singapore every year to celebrate hari raya with my relatives there. It’s always fun deciding what colour to use for our baju kurung and to bake hari raya cookies. We, the youngsters also get Duit Raya (Raya Money) from the adults :D
Besides eating all the fabulous food, I think we all love counting how much money we get by the end of the day :D
For the Chinese, They celebrate Chinese New Year every year that is also called ‘Spring Festival’ and their way of celebrating is slightly similar to how we celebrate Hari Raya. Except they bake mooncakes and have performances called the ‘Lion Dance’.
For the Indians, They celebrate Deepavali, which is also called ‘Festival of Lights’ where the Hindus would celebrate also with their family and relatives. They would also create a kolam right outside their house using colourful rice forming exquisite designs.
In my opinion, no matter what race we are, or how different we are. We are all the same.
